How is Landstrom's Black Hills Gold Jewelry Made

>You can use this tool above to translate the articles in this site, by copy paste the paragraph  on
the box above, choose the language you wish for translation and hit the translate button.....

The first thing that has to be done is to find, pan or dig gold ore. The ore is then separated from the foreign material such as rock and dirt. After the gold is separated it is melted and poured into bars. At this point it is usually 24kt. 24kt gold can not be used for jewelry because it is too soft and will not hold it's shape too good. At the 24kt stage you can dent the gold with your fingernail. To use gold for jewelry it must be alloyed with other metals to harden it. This process is called smelting.
After the gold is alloyed with another metal it is tested for kt weight. 10 kt gold is used for rings, earrings, necklaces, pendants and other pieces that will need to be harder to stand the abuse of time. The 12kt gold is used for decoration and is usually colored red or pink and green. Then the 14kt gold is used to make things such as engagement and wedding rings. Also when the pieces are made of Sterling Silver then it is the same process as the 10kt gold frames.
The first step is to design the piece of jewelry to be made. This process is up to the designers. The first design is made of wax so it can be re-sculpted and reshaped to meet the image that is to be achieved. Then the piece is subjected to a group of people that pick the pieces that is thought to be good pieces for the consumers preferences. After the pieces have been selected then it is time to start the production of that piece.
Now that the piece has been selected there are several of these pieces made of wax. This is the frame. The frames are attached to a wax stem. The stem or tree as some call it is ready it is coated with a heat resistant material to form a mold. After the mold hardens it is submitted to high heat to melt out the wax tree. When all of the wax is removed then it is time to fill the mold with 10kt gold to create the frames for the jewelry pieces. If the pieces are to be made of 14kt gold then 14kt gold will be used in this process. The mold is filled with melted 10kt gold and set aside to cool and harden. When the frames are cool the mold material is removed and the pieces are cut from the tree and cleaned of all burs and sharp edges.
Next is the adding of the 12kt gold leaves that have been stamped from a sheet of red or green gold. (the coloring of gold was explained in my last article). These pieces are soldered to the frame. After they have been soldered then the jewelry is dipped into 24kt gold to produce the lustrous coating. After the pieces are coated then they go to the engravers.
The engravers hand engrave the veins in the leaves and do any other engraving that is necessary for this piece. When the engravers are finished then the pieces go to the wrigglers. This is a process where between the veins on the leaves and on other parts of the piece the small engravings are made. This process is called wriggling. The wriggling gives the pieces more luster by reflecting light from all these small marks.
Next the pieces are polished and inspected to insure quality and durability. If the pieces do not meet the standards set forth by the original owner that started the company then they are destroyed (never sold as substandard or seconds). After the inspection is through then the pieces are carefully packed with the lifetime warranty from the company and placed in a safe place awaiting shipment.
