I'm with you about breaking out from the "norm"!

I suggest you experiment a few looks first so that you know which style suit you the most.

A few ways you could go about it:
1) Dress yourself up based on "themes" - e.g. bohemian chic, hollywood glamour, rock, retro etc.
2) Take reference from magazine and try to get inspirations e.g. try to re-work certain looks featured in the fashion spreads to your budget and since you love to sew, you could even get dress-making inspirations from them
3) Take a look at your wardrobe and think about how you could pair certain pieces up with others that you've never really thought of pairing with or think of creative ways that you could possibly wear that dress that you've never worn before after you've bought it
4) Get a friend to dress up and she in turn dresses you up, perhaps you could get some inspirations from the activity

Buying jewelry isn't really a difficult task, and we do it all the time, buying necklaces, bracelets, rings which catch our eye. The thing is, we often have more jewelry than we remember to wear and the newness of your purchase wears off, it usually falls to the wayside, and you're back to wearing the few trusty jewelry items you've owned since forever. So what's different between a piece of enduring jewelry and just a passing fancy? That, my dears, is all in the art of choosing jewelry. So, to avoid cluttered jewelry boxes and money wasted on things you never wear, follow these tips:
Buy versatile jewelry. One of my favorite pieces of jewelry, which I wear over and over again, is a flexible gold necklace, which I can use as a headband, a belt, a necklace, or loop it around my wrist a few times and use it as a bracelet. You want jewelry that changes with your mood and outfits-jewelry that adapts to you. So, perhaps get a ring you can also use as a pendant, or a chain that doubles as a bracelet. Be alert when you shop think outside the box, and you'll be sure to find jewelry you'll wear again and again.
Make sure your jewelry enhances your body type. Long fingers suit rings with round stones while short fingers suit oval rings, which elongate the hand. Long necklaces either in a V or a Y can make you look taller, whereas chokers make you look shorter. Small boned ladies with delicate wrists should consider thin bracelets while medium to large boned ladies should consider wide, exaggerated bracelets.
Make sure your earrings go with your face shape. You want earrings which flatter your face shape-not highlight its flaws. Here's the basic rundown. Round faces need to avoid big button-shaped earrings or hoops. Instead, go for long, dangling earrings or rectangular ones. Rectangular faces need to avoid long earrings and go for simple stubs instead.
Oh, and don't follow jewelry trends too closely. We all have the impulse to buy trendy items (I'm certainly guilty of it), but keep them to a minimum. Instead of spending $10 or $20 there on cheap, trendy items, save up to buy something enduring for yourself.
